The glass plate at the base of the Searchlight has stencils of the eight aircraft flown by Bomber Command – Halifax, Wellington, Lancaster, Mosquito, Stirling, Blenheim, Whitely and Hampden. This would be an awe-inspiring sight when lit at night. The centre spire represents a searchlight, a major threat to Bomber Command aircraft during night Ops. It is made of stainless steel, glass and black granite, and commemorates RAAF air and ground crew of Bomber Command in World War Two. On the west lawn of the Australian War Memorial grounds is a Sculpture Garden where the Bomber Command Memorial is located.
